Letters to the Editor
I love living in Preble County, Ohio and the United States, however, like most people, I hate paying taxes.
The never ending horror stories about government waste with $400 hammers and multi million dollar bridges to nowhere haunt us all.
If you have never owned your own business you really have no idea just how burdensome taxes can be. Every month, even small businesses like mine, pay out thousands of dollars in a variety of taxes just to do business. I really do not mind as much paying local taxes as at least I have some input on how and where my money is spent and I know those spending it pretty well.
To survive in these tough economic times every business has to make sound business decisions and the Eaton Community Schools are asking you to make a sound business decision by investing again in your local school system.
You have a rare opportunity to construct two brand new modern school buildings for likely less than $1.25 a week if you own a home valued at $100,000. The State of Ohio on the other hand is contributing $24,000,000 to build those two schools but that we have a limited amount of time to take advantage of those funds before those money is passed on to another school district. Build two schools now for about 20% of the total cost, compared to ten years down the road when the price will likely increase to over $45,000,000. and we may have to pay it all.
It is basically pay a little now, again likely less than $60 a year for the home value previously mentioned, or as much as 500% more later on. It does not take a certified public account or a financial genius to determine that issue 34 is good for the community. It makes sound business sense, is based on the districts future needs and will allow the Eaton Community Schools to maintain their “excellent” rating. This is one tax levy I am confident that the money will be put to good use and those responsible fully understand and appreciate their obligation to make every cent count.
Please vote yes on issue 34.
Pat Taylor, Eaton
